I guess this thread is about reasons why people think things are the way they are that aren't actually supported by anything but inference.

A good CATEGORY for this is behaviors and psychology that people just assume are evolutionary-ingrained. "Rational" Big Fagot-types love to reduce all human behavior to some practical, evolutionary explanation without any real support.

For example, "the male obsession with cleavage comes from the fact that the breasts look like butts, which reminds men of the area where they put their dick."

OK, and your evidence is?

Then there's the whole "cute" thing. That's the one I think is bullshit.

Everybody thinks the cuteness-obsession evolved due to babies, so that we'll fall in love with them and want to take care of them and all that.

But really, that doesn't hold water.

My girlfriend hates human children and babies and thinks they're disgusting and not cute. I agree.

YET, baby *animals* cause her (and me!!!!) to squeal.

Shouldn't we, in fact, be totally in love with human babies and find other species' babies horrible, if this is so "evolutionary?"

Cuteness is a lot more complicated than just babies and babyishness.

I've lost the energy to really put any true effort into this post, but anyway.

I guess my point is, while animal behavior can generally be plausibly explained in biological/evolutionary terms, human behavior and psychology is really massively complicated and people should knock it off with the reductionism.

Babies and little kids are adorable! There's a daycare on my campus, and sometimes I see a big line of toddlers all HARNESSED TOGETHER IN THEIR PUFFY WINTER CLOTHES, and it warms my heart about as much as a really good dog would.
