Cats really can understand the difference between their name and other things.

I could prove this with a cat I once had, but he's dead.

He knew his name, without a doubt.

The sound of their name and the way it VIBRATES is no less distinctive than any other sounds that they can distinguish and assign various meanings to (food clattering into their dish, another cat yowling, etc.)
