I have a macbook with an Intel processor. I need to figure out how to run exe files. I know there's a way.

I've been trying to get Soulseek and Fruity Loops, but they are both exe files. One of my friends has a mac with Soulseek on it, so I know it's possible.

I think he may have Windows XP or something as his OS, though. My progress so far has lead me to some thing called wine, but I don't know what that is. If anybody can explain all this to me, so I'm less afraid of it, I would develop a small amount of love for life and the world which is contagious and can lead to good things.

I believe there's a program called CrossOver that can open Windows files like exe.

WINE is a windows compatibility layer for Unix systems.

Crossover is a bunch of proprietary stuff combined with WINE to offer greater functionalty (for things like games).

You can also use a VM if you have a copy of Windows.

You can run Avid and Premiere on a Windows computer, you know. Plus Maya and Flash.

The only reason to use a Mac is for FinalCut Pro.

Generally everything available for both Mac OS X and Windows is better on Windows, unless the software is made by Apple themselves (iTunes, Quicktime and now Safari are the worse software I have ever encountered on a PC).

You say, "so why do you have a Mac?" and they also mumble something about how they're "better for video editing and Photoshop."

They're actually vastly inferior for Photoshop, and this is now reflected in their sales (sales for PC versions of photoshop are much, much greater).

The problem with Apple is that they constantly release new systems that destroy backward compatibility, so you're constantly in a position of not being able to run your software 'well' on the new system. So if you had a Pre-OS X version of Photoshop you were decently screwed, and if you had a Pre-Intel version of Photoshop you were decently screwed. Meanwhile you can still run Photoshop 3.0 on Windows XP, and probably Vista too, considering how well Adobe writes their software (all nicely contained in a single directory).

I'm getting the Mac TO use Final Cut pro. So there it is, sir.

Psaros, Final Cut is a mac only product. It's mad by apple! I test drove it out in the apple store and I like it. It's not like I'm throwing away my 2.5 PC's. They'll still be around. I don't intend on ever getting Vista.

It's just that my PC is great at everything EXCEPT video editing. And Time is money. With a mac and the fact that final cut was built from the ground up to work on it, I almost NEED the mac.

Duh Theldorrin, there's editing software on PC. What else is new? That's not the point. The point is my desktop does SO MUCH that I'm taxing it. It's not a multicore CPU. Instead of investing on upgrades, I rather just spend the money once on a mac and get it over with.

I would be spending the same money almost to upgrade the PC to where I can edit video the same as on the mac. Well almost. The Mac pro is a powerhouse. Did you see the specs?

My money is better spent getting the mac. Not only because of that one thing that it does VERY well. I mean, come on, Final Cut it's used in Hollywood studios worldwide. Yes, as well as avid and Premiere and Final and Flash.

Where does this vague, unsubstantiated idea that I'm getting a Mac mean I'm switching to one? I'm adding it to my working environment. Everything else will be done on my PC.

There's also the fact, PSaros, that I've actually been investigating and trying out the Macs in the stores. I used to be like you and say they were for idiots and fags and whatever but frankly I'm not getting it because it looks pretty of runs iTunes, which I hate. iTunes is garbage.

But Psaros, in this case the Mac is better for image editing. It's going to be cheaper for me to get a Mac Pro than it would to get one of those turnkey editing workstations. Those are SEVERAL thousand dollars and can go into the double digits. You have to explain to me how I gave any inidcation that I was "JUST" getting a mac for the hell of it.

To get a PC or make one that matches the features wouldn't even help me because the PC REQUIREMENTS ARE MORE.

And that's the other factor I had to think about. On PC to do editing I would need a Matrox card to have realtime editing. On the Mac all I need is enough RAM and a fast CPU.

Speaking of my Matrox card, I'm going to put it on ebay.

In any event, Thel is right. Photoshop runs SLOWER on the new Macs than they did before. Why? LOL, because of the switch to Intel. So now the PowerPC cpu has to be emulated on the x86. I read that simply ROTATING a photo take about 30 seconds.

On the other hand I read that apps created in Universal Binary are super quick. Final Cut Studio 2 is in Universal Binary.

I hated those commercials at first too because some of that stuff was just FUD. Especially the whole thing about viruses.
