Does Etna ever start being useful? Spending more time levelling her up seems wasteful when Laharl and samurais are a thousand times more powerful.

The mistake you're probably making is having her use spears (I know, I did it too). She needs a high damage weapon to be really effective so a better choice is to give her an axe. She'll do more damage if you do that.

With a spear she'll be weak until later in the game when she'll finally start to catch up. In general a Samurai is a better spear user.

Laharl can basically conquer every level alone.

In general the story based characters are useless compared to the ones you make yourself.

I did use Jennifer a lot, though.

I was planning on making a second samurai my axe user, but I guess I'll just give one to Etna then.

Flonne is pretty good when she learns some fucking magic.

Flonne is a good archer (archers kind of suck anyway), and it complements her healing abilities well (if you can get her some star mage spells she'll be even better).

Gordon is actually a very good gun character, and he's probably the second best storybased character.

Thursday is a good tank, and the Japanese voice actor for Thursday is pretty nifty.

Laharl can basically do whatever the fuck he wants.

Kurtis would be better if you didn't get him so late in the game (he's still decent).

Jennifer is alright for a bare fist weapon user. Much like Etna she's just sort of average. She learns some nifty abilities of her own, but they aren't really any better than the weapon attacks.

Yeah, I had her create a star mage and cleric so I imagine she's pretty set.

I'm only on Chapter 7 so I haven't seen those other characters.

What's the point of sending your characters back to Level 1?

You don't do it until much later, if you plan on doing it read a guide.

I hope you had your Cleric make the Star mage so he can learn some attack spells (my cleric actually ended up being one of my best damage dealers).

I use Etna because of her cool sound bytes, yet her attacks may be useless, but her vocals just make the game that much better.
