For those who did not see Jon Ronson's documentary The Double Life of Jonathan King, the story of the former pop impresario convicted last September of abusing underage boys, the journalist's two-part article in the Guardian (part one, part two) covers identical ground in slightly more detail.

Neither the documentary nor the article offer much insight into the minds of Jonathan King or fellow paedophile Chris Denning. Perhaps this is because neither man appears to understand that they have done something wrong. In their eyes, they have nothing to explain.

They say, writing and talking it out may be a best cure to a uncurable sickness. I cannot talk this to anyone I know, otherwise I will be shunned, humiliated, and maybe even arrested. But I need to tell someone, because it helps me out. I need to confess. I am a pedophile and this is my story.

Phil noticed a site called The Life of a Pedophile on blogger's Recently Updated list and, unsurprisingly, the title caught his eye. The weblog purports to be the online confession of a paedophile. (Google cached copy.)

Is this a fascinating glimpse into the mind of someone fighting their desire to abuse children or is it just another in a series of fake web pages?

Examining the Evidence

A look at the site statistics revealed that 9.58% of visitors come from the United Arab Emirates. This is unusually high for a website that has no specific Middle Eastern thread. (By the time I thought to make a screenshot, this figure had changed to 9.21%.)

Using Google to reveal who has linked to the site exposes someone calling himself MADAli who posted a link to the site on the Hall calling it the "Best Web Diary Ever" on 1 January 2002, three days after it began. (Google cached copy.)

The Child Pornography Project

MADAli has a website called Untalent and likes to play online pranks pretending to be other people. His jokes include The Child Pornography Project in which he offered to sell child pornography to several random people on AIM. He likes to make jokes about paedophilia.

Someone using the same hotmail address as MADAli, unlimitedmadness@hotmail.com, is also the author of two short stories in something called The Young Girl Erotica Repository. Both feature underage sex. In one a 15-year-old boy tells us about a time when he spent the night with a friend his age and both had sex with his friend's 13-year-old younger sister, in the other a 16-year-old boy describes a sexual experience he has with his 12-year-old cousin while he is helping her with her history lesson. The same person has posted messages to groups such as alt.sex.incest and alt.sex.pedophilia.

Coming Full Circle

MADAli is a regular contributor on a Dubai internet site. Dubai is of course one of the Gulf states that comprise the United Arab Emirates. Can this be a coincidence?

Is MADAli the author of the paedophile confession site, another in his series of bad taste pranks? Or did he, like Phil, just happen to notice it in the list of Recently Updated blogs? I've emailed him. Let's see how he responds.
