I'm a huge lyrics fag, but I'll admit I didn't pay much attention to Lana Del Rey's lyrics. She has a nice voice and the music is good. I like that style. She's no Amy Winehouse, but it's cool.

I've been listening to a lot of Prince. I think Parade is his best album, but Purple Rain and the Batman soundtrack are also really great. "Sometimes It Snows in April" came on while I was playing Mario Kart and I had to pause the game to shed a single somber tear.

Post     Re: Music?

Okay, I finished my top 10 Kinks song, I had to think about it a lot.

In order, from 10 to my best,

10. Alcohol

A song about the evils of Alcohol, which is what made Kinks unique, because while everyone was rocking with drinks and drugs, Kinks made a song about how shitty Alcohol. Also, back when I was driving to college with my friend everyday, he'd always ask me to play this song, so even though I have heard it a million times, it never got boring to me.

9. Lazy Old Sun

I don't think anyone will ever put this song in any of Kinks top whatever lists, but I love it, specially the part where the music stops and Ray sings, "Kiss me with one ray of light from your lazy old suuuuuuuun". It's a bit of a weird song about...the sun.

8. Little Miss Queen of Darkness

This is a bit of an emo song and the lyrics makes it like a song that would fit better in the 90s than the flower power decade, with lines like,

"Although she looked so happy,
There was sadness in her eyes.
And her curly false eyelashes
Weren't much of a disguise.
And her bright and golden hair,
Was not all that it might seem.
Little Miss Queen of Darkness
Dances sadly on.
Yes Little Miss Queen of Darkness
Dancing, dancing on."

But its not sad and stupid.

7. Waterloo Sunset

This fits much better in a top 10 listing, and one of the most famous Kinks songs, and it deserves it, because its Kink's most beautiful songs.

6. You Really Got Me

From The Kink's first album, before they sang about characters and how shitty contemporary times were. Its the simplest tune in my list, and a straightforward rock song, but it is perfect as what it is supposed to do. If Ray Davies just stuck to such rock songs, I still think they would have been a great rock band.

5. Lola

If I want to introduce someone to The Kinks, I'd make them listen to Lola as the first song. Its the most instantly likable song. But I guess, if they DO like Lola, there is no guarantee they'd like their other classics, because its much more mainstream than their other songs, even if the lyrics aren't.

4. Sunny Afternoon

A lot of Kinks songs puts me in a particular mood. Like Waterloo Sunset wants to make me travel to a place like it, and a song like "Sunny Afternoon", makes me want to just lie down and try to forget everything.

"My girlfriend's run off with my car,
And gone back to her ma and pa,
Telling tales of drunkenness and cruelty.
Now I'm sitting here,
Sipping at my ice cold beer,
Lazing on a sunny afternoon."

3. Do you Remember Walter?

Whenever I feel I'm getting older and feel a bit nostalgic, I put on this song, and feel even more nostalgic, as I remember friends who I don't see anymore.

"Walter, you are just an echo of a world I knew so long ago
If you saw me now you wouldn't even know my name.
I bet you're fat and married and you're always home in bed by half-past eight.
And if I talked about the old times you'd get bored and you'll have nothing more to say.
Yes people often change, but memories of people can remain. "

2. 20th Century Man

This was my anthem for my teenage years. Back then, I felt it fit perfectly with how I felt.

And I won't even say that its not how I feel anymore.

"Ain't got no ambition, I'm just disillusioned
I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna be here.
My mama said she can't understand me
She can't see my motivation
Just give me some security,
I'm a paranoid schizoid product of the twentieth century."

1. Celluloid Heroes

Not only is this my favorite song, but its probably number 1 of the saddest songs I know. I'm not even sure why it hits it every time I listen to it, because its not about death or love or personal stuff but about old movie stars. But the way Ray Davis sings it, and the lyrics, makes the song, to me at least, about a lot of stuff.

"But please don't tread on dearest Marilyn
Cause she's not very tough
She should have been made of iron or steel
But she was only made of flesh and blood"

-----

And here are 10 additional songs that didn't make the list. I didn't put these in any order,

A Well Respected Man
Set Me Free
Dedicated Follower of Fashion
Dandy
Harry Rag
The Village Green Preservation Society
Plastic Man
Holiday
Where Have All the Good Times Gone
I'm Not Like Everybody Else

Listening to Lana Del Rey invokes an emotional apocalypse within me so I can't really listen to her a lot but I think she is an advanced genius. Her latest album is fukn good. HAIM fuckin rawks. chik bands 4 ever

Otherwise I listen to a lot of Miguel, Ariana Grande, AC/DC and all the pop music from the '90s and 2000s that I used to think was super gay. I was listening to U2's "All That You Can't Leave Behind" yesterday and thinking about how awesome it was!!!! I'm a disgusting hipster. This floaty, droney Neil Young/Bruce Springsteeny/Dire Straits style band THE WAR ON DRUGS is really good if you're into that sort of shit. now i gotta go suk a cawk

The entirety of "Ultraviolence" by Lana del Rey is an amazing album. They played West Coast on the radio one time (I forgot my flash drive so couldn't play my JAMS) and I fell in love with it. Getting the whole album just because of one song felt like a gamble, but I wasn't disappointed!

I've been on this really weird Sonic Youth kick, having never really listened to them before (my only exposure, before this year, was from the Homerpalooza episode of the Simpsons, and perhaps a glance or two on 120 Minutes during the early 90s MTV).

Being the hipster I am, I picked up Evol and Sister on vinyl a few months back, and they've been on the top of my rotation ever since. That and Grizzly Bear's Shields, which is such an amazing album (still haven't gotten tired of it even after listening to it nearly nonstop for the last two years).

EVOL and Sister are grate albums. "Schizophrenia" is probably the most beautiful Sonic Youth song. Have you not listened to Daydream Nation yet? That's kind of their magnum opus.

I know, but for some reason, I haven't really listened to Daydream Nation other than having it on in the background while working a few times. I seem to have a problem with double albums, in that it's a lot of music to listen to at once and get into it. I have it on my phone now, thanks to Amazon's new Prime Music thing, so that should help if I can listen to it anywhere.

And I agree about Schizophrenia. I guess I get why Teenage Riot is their most popular song, but I don't think it is their best. Madonna, Sean, and Me is also really awesome.

It's definitely worth it to give Daydream Nation another shot. The extended guitar freakout at the end of "Total Trash" is THE extended guitar freakout of their career (and they recorded a lot of extended guitar freakouts). I'd also recommend checking out Rather Ripped, Murray Street and Dirty. Their discography is kind of spotty but those albums are solid.

I've tried listening to De-Loused in the Comatorium so many times and I'm pretty sure I'll never enjoy it. I wonder if I would be able to get into any of their other albums.

I always try listening to a group's best/quintessential album first and just keep trying to get into it instead of trying to find other stuff I might like. It's dumb.

Here's some other albums I'm still trying to get into:
"Daydream Nation," Sonic Youth
"Forever Changes," Love
"Electric Warrior," T-Rex
Any seminal jazz album ever

"Blonde on Blonde" is my biggest success story in this respect. I listened to it first and found it too long and murky but then I listened to a bunch of other Bob Dylan albums and came back to it and was like "YEAH!!!!!" Geez, maybe it's my only success story in this area... Oh, "1999" by Prince too.
It is distressing to me that I still can't get into "Daydream Nation" even after finding a bunch of Sonic Youth albums I like (EVOL, Sister, Goo).

Does anybody here read much music criticism? I started out reading George Starostin and moved on to Mark Prindle but now I only ever read Robert Christgau's old reviews.

www.robertchristgau.com

I really like him because he's a huge bitch about stuff he doesn't like and when he DOES really like something (Prince, James Brown, Das Racist, cok) it is very convincing.

Getting into Jazz can be tricky. Is there any variety in particular that you like more any any other? For example, I find Bop to be the easiest to start with, since it combines pop-sentimentality around and within the improvisations. Stuff like Giant Steps by Coltrane and Birth of Cool or Kind of Cool by Miles Davis. And you can't really go wrong with most Charles Mingus, since he focuses so much on the rhythm than most of the others. The Clown or Mingus Ah Um are good starts with him. From there, try Charlie Parker, Bill Evans, and Stan Getz. Getz's bassanova stuff is also really fantastic.

However, I'd stay away from stuff like Bitches Brew (which is awesome, but very avant-garde) or most Thelonius Monk (his stuff is really messy but very unique) until you're more comfortable with the genre. There are some really trippy Miles Davis albums out there, where basically they'd drop acid and play for hours, which is really only fascinating in small doses.

I've listened to a lot of albums by a lot of jazz artists. I don't think I have the attention span for it. I have at least two books on the subject of listening to jazz and yeah, I just don't know.

Everybody on earth likes Kind of Blue and I don't DISLIKE it, but I've mainly listened to it in the background or else fallen asleep while trying to listen to it attentively. I've listened to "Blue in Green," by itself, several dozen times and I still don't know what it sounds like. I expect to get this area of my life sorted out someday, but it's a big mystery right now.

I like Giant Steps. It keeps my attention pretty well. The Birth of the Cool was the first jazz album I bought and it did nothing for me but I've come around to it somewhat.

There was a period of time where I was trying pretty hard to get into jazz. I realized it's mostly not for me, but I still love Mingus Ah Um and Languidity by Sun Ra. The title track on that album is the dopest fucken Sun Ra song.

I've been listening to the Superfly soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield. How great is that album y'all???? I think every song on it has been sampled in multiple hip-hop songs.

I'm not a huge jazz buff, but I listened to a Best of John Coltrane album and I almost exclusively listen to him now. (Not music in general, just jazz) I also enjoy Miles Davis, Quincy Jones and Dave Brubeck.

My Favorite Things, Wise One, Greensleeves, Alabama and Mile's Mode are all amazing Coltrane songs, if you're interested! They happen to be my favorites. Very Happy

What is the oldest era you can enjoy music from? Aside from classical stuff. 60s is awesome, and with 50s, the only guy I love is Buddy Holly, but rest isn't that exciting to me. With 40s, I've listened to some beatnick music, and while enjoyable, I haven't really spent too much time on it.
