The Long Walk is clearly the best Stephen King book, but The Stand is pretty close.
Um, Eyes of the Dragon is really good fantasy and is much better than the Dark Tower combined, minus the Drawing of the Three.
IT is genuinely frightening but gets long and gay by the end.
Under the Dome is exceptional. |

I haven't read The Long Walk, but I second The Stand recommendation. Also, this might just be me, but I really dug 'Salem's Lot. |

Though we should all take into consideration that you also like to suck hobo dicks in parking lots late at night. |

The value of the parking lot hobo suck offs was offset by the fact you brought up Dean (of) Kuntz |

I read "The Stand" a couple of times and I remember it being extremely awesome, but I read it when I was a teenager, so its possible its actually gay shit. |

All of the Stephen King's early books are good, to be honest. For example, Running Man. |

I just want everybody to know that I realize that Dean Koontz books are hack trash, but they're entertaining and they get the job done.
Stephen King goes on and fucking on.
"On Writing", however, is great. But that doesn't really count as a Stephen King book. Honestly I like him better as an essayist. |

Stephen King writes characters excellently, but yeah, he has trouble with plots.
Salem's Lot is great. I guess I am kind of a fanboy.

Driving cross-country a few months back, I listened to Eye of the World.
I did not like it.
I don't know if it is the fault of the narrator (the voice he used while reading as the Dark One was particularly irritating, making him sound like Snidely Whiplash), or if it was the writing itself, but it was overlong, predictable, and more often dull than good.
I imagine I would have loved it if I read it when I was 14, but not at 34. |

Has anyone read House of Leaves?
I keep thinking about getting it, but it doesn't seem to be the easiest of reads... |

I've read about fifty pages, and it is rather complicated. The idea is really cool, and the story is legitimately frightening, but be prepared for footnotes, odd page layouts, stories within stories, and more. And if you get a copy, make sure it is the color-print copy (certain words appear in green and red throughout the story). |

Yeah, I saw that weird layout when I was flipping through it. Thanks for the heads up, maybe I'll try to find a cheap used copy or something. |

The Army of the Potomac trilogy by Bruce Catton is my favorite non-fiction work. It's about the American Civil War, so if you have no interest in that then whatever, but it's very well written.
The Devil in the White City is a book I have raved about on FTU before, but it's pretty god damn awesome. It's about a ridiculous serial killer (he has a MURDER CASTLE with trapdoors that drop people into furnaces and shit) stalking Chicago during history's most epic fair. |
