There is also the fact that a lot of 'in jokes' are commonly things that create a lot of laughter, and they generally have a very limited appeal. So people get their buds to laugh at those things and it gives them the mistaken impression that they're genuinely funny.

I don't have a strong enough opinion on the topic to post about it, but I want my neutrality known.

There are probably a lot of factors that contribute to it (confirmation bias, socialization, the fact that most dudes really only hang out and joke with other dudes, etc.), so whatever.
