It also must be borne in mind that it's kind of unfair to expect me to give a thorough answer, on FTU, to the question of "why are you marrying her?" |

You're ridiculous.
It's your own fear of posting such things that makes you so vulnerable.
I have no problems saying that there are people here who have deeply enriched my life, and I don't live with them or plan to marry any of them. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

Also, you should put the punctuation outside of the apostrophes. We're supposed to be communicating with some sense of modernity, here.
(In that particular case, it should be double punctuated) _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

All right, dope, if you're marrying her despite your misgivings and anxieties because you love her and anticipate spending the rest of your life together, guess what! You're just like every other schlubby joe who gets married.
Chris, it's OK if you didn't grow up to be, in every way, the unique and starlike social anomaly that you pictured yourself as in your teenage years and (in your case) twenties. Part of becoming an adult is realizing you're not a literary character or the star of a very long movie. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

I don't like when you insult Chris like this, because it seems like you're suggesting that I'll want to get married and have children at some point. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

No, you can hold onto your principles, but you also can't feel so ashamed of your perspectives changing that you refuse to admit that they have.
At one time in my life, I'm sure, I insisted I'd never get married or have children. I have changed. I am a person who is not seeking marriage or planning on being married, ever, but I am also not categorically stating that I never will and I know that there are people on this planet with whom I'd be happy to commit to in a matrimonial way. Likewise, while I haven't changed in thinking that having children of your own is narcissistic, I am open to and even interested in one day adopting.
I don't feel like I've failed my past self, or drearily joined the rest of the flock, for accepting these changes. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total

I would only ever get married for citizenship or money.
And I wouldn't adopt or have a biological child, either. Except in the extremely unlikely scenario that there is some sort of plague that manages to kill most of my relatives and not me and I have some of their kids to take care of.
These scenarios are about as believable as me gaining the power cosmic. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

Jason is right. 50% of the people I grow up with said they'd neveeeer get married, and the same people got married and would make comments such as, "lol can you believe I'M getting MARRIED?!?" |

Quote: | I'm not at all seeing an argument for what distinguishes you from anyone who insisted in adolescence that they would stay single and then failed to do so. |
I thought I would never get married not out of some kind of sense that marriage was (inherently) for "lesser" people, or that I was gonna keep fuckin' bitches forever, or anything else "adolescent," but because of the objective, ego-less observation that I am and always have been (in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood) extremely, insistently solitary.
That may get me nowhere with you, since being, or assessing yourself as, "extremely solitary" sounds like the kind of thing you would deem inherently adolescent, since you're sort of obsessed with associating as many personality characteristics or philosophical positions as possible with adolescent-ness, but that's it. That's the reason.
By the way, I don't think being "extremely solitary" makes me unique or rare, or use it as a basis for self-aggrandizing feelings about myself. It's non-standard, but not rare (and sure as fuck not rare on the Internet.)
There's more to why my relationship/marriage is so amusing to me than just "I never thought I was going to get married, but now, haha, look, I'm getting married."
It was the way that it happened.
Quote: | You're just like every other schlubby joe who gets married. |
This wasn't "meet somebody, start dating, relationship gradually evolves to a point, some years later, where we eventually settle for one another and decide to get married."
What happened was sudden and dramatic.
Before Lexy and I became a thing, I had already known her for six years, and had never thought of her as a prospective girlfriend (let alone wife). Without going into specifics, in a fucking instant that was completely turned on its head. It happened on Friday October 12th, 2007. In an explosive moment of supernatural revelation, I knew that we were going to be together, for a long time.
We weren't even a couple yet. Not for another three weeks.
This wasn't like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, gradually evolving and maturing and accepting a new way of living. I didn't "grow into the idea" over time.
This was Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense at the moment he realized that he was a ghost, or Luke when Vader said "No... I am your father."
My perception of myself and the trajectory of my life, and of my relationship with her, and my relationship with relationships, was instantly decimated.
It's the difference between dying of cancer and dying by a lightning strike: one situation develops, the other happens. This just fucking HAPPENED.
That's the main reason why my situation amazes and amuses me: the near-instantaneousness with which I found myself in it, and how I had to reassess everything, not over the course of months or years, but hours. The circumstances also make the whole thing feel weirdly "scripted", which is another reason it's funny to me - this sense that it's not my choice at all, like I'm just witnessing it happen.
Quote: | You're also saying that you're different because you're ambivalent about the ceremony and are doing it for the woman's gratification, as if the typical groom shows equal enthusiasm for the marriage as his bride? |
I never said that I was "different" in THAT respect, and I couldn't have anyway, since I didn't say I was ambivalent about the wedding! In fact, I said I wanted to have the experience and enjoy it (in full consciousness, nonetheless, that marriage ceremonies and designations and whatnot are silly and cheesy, even if the underlying purpose of them isn't). It's possible to simultaneously enjoy something ironically and sincerely. |

Is Friday October 12th, 2007 the day you found a donut under a truck? Was that whole episode... a metaphor? |

*THE VISION*, which I have never described or even mentioned to anyone (including Lexy) until this thread, happened on the 12th.
The cupcake happened 3 days later on the night of the 15th, when I was still floating through the cloud of satori and extremely heightened psychic sensitivity. |
