There is a captcha, but this is an old-ass version of phpBB and the spammers have solved it.

We could upgrade to the current version, but I'm too dumb to figure out how to make it 100% identical to the current board and god forbid we change anything around here.

That depends on how you sort the list.

The problem with the current system (besides the sorting) is that sometimes real people trying to create legitimate accounts never get verified. I know of at least two people who've gotten stuck in that limbo, with God knows how many we DON'T know about.

I'm too ignorant about phpBB to offer a solution though.

All I know is, I don't have a spam problem with any of the blogs and/or wikis I run, after implementing only the most rudimentary sorts of security. Is phpBB really that shitty and uncustomizable?

Maybe a new required field on the user signup form with one of those challenge questions? A third-party captcha plugin? Some additional requirement on the email end?

I mean, I don't REALLY care, but it would be a little bonus for everybody if we could find a way to end the nuisance.

Maybe I'll look into it.
