You argue with the conceptions that the person personally has, or the conceptions that are widely held in society.
If I were in India my comments would firstly be about Hindu views. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

OK, we're all atheist. So anyway, what I hate is when somebody has some "exotic" idea about religion and just decides to believe it (what the fuck are your thoughts worth if you can DECIDE to believe a proposition?) because it's novel and exciting. People do this when they're negotiating with their own left brain to hang onto some precious vestige of their dumbness while feeling smart. "What if God isn't a conscious being, but is just love itself?" So then you say "then why call it God?" if you even have the fucking energy which I don't.
People are all "read the Bible, it has literary significance" or "read the Koran, it enriches your understanding of world culture" and I just couldn't possibly give less of a fuck. Just fucking, go eat shit somewhere else please. That probably makes me boring. |

This is generally for everyone.
All I want to say is that you can't make something not exist by thinking real hard about it and making everyone else agree with you.
And the faster you can accept that, the faster you'll realize there are crazy things happening in existence, and the faster you'll stop wasting brain power on atheism. |

Big Fagot's post was absolutely an attack on me, and that's okay, and I understand.
But just so you know, and even though it sounds like it at times, I don't just make my shit up. It all has firm foundations.
I have whittled and synthesized everything that's true in science, psychology, parapsychology, spirituality, and religion into the ultimate system. Trust me. |

Holy shit! From that article about stoning people to death in Iran:
Quote: | Article 103 - States that adulterers who were convicted on the basis of a confession can go free if they manage to wriggle out of their pit during execution. |
I think the guy who managed to squirm out of the pit while being bound and people smashed rocks against his skull made his way over to Japan to join the Sokushinbutsu sect, because going out that way is just ... TOO EASY!! |

Imagine if there was this illicit affair going on between two super tough giants who were for some reason married to other people (OH, they were victims of cruel arranged marriages!!!), and every week they fight through a barrage of stones and stagger back to their homes to plan their next meeting!
I think that would make for a really good dramatic comedy, which would give people positive views about Iran and help Americans conceptualize life in another country. |

Previously angrily skeptical, then Christianish, now acceptingly skeptical/agnostic.
I'm currently reading Mere Christianity alongside Thus Spoke Zarathustra. CS Lewis seems rather smug so far. Nietzsche seems rather crazy.
Since the God conversation has sidelined, I want to shift it to the first chapter of Mere Christianity. He's starting the whole thing by saying that there is an actual Law of Human Nature/Morality. That regardless of culture the basic precepts of morality ie. bravery, kindness, do unto others as they would do unto you, are basically the same and that all of us know these laws even if we pretend we don't.
He uses a number of examples such as, when you break a promise, instead of saying "promises are a stupid idea" you try to say why in this case it was okay to break promises.
Personally, I think that his argument that there is a general law of morality could be easily explained by preservation and advancement of self, physical in some cases and societal in other cases.
Basically, I might agree that there is a common thread between people but he says that Morality belongs in the realm of mathematics in terms of exactness. Anyways, the book is an adapted set of speeches, meaning that it carries the problem most speeches have as logical arguments... an abundance of analogies posed as arguments and rather 'persuasive' examples that aren't actually explored in depth to check if it is true or not. He relies on a "that sounds about right" method of convincing.
I dunno, anyone else read this, I'm only 17 pages in. |
