Derek: Yeah I pretty much just gave up on my other major choices after they all made me miserable. Now I'm going to go to school for arts. Drawing is one of the only things I can do for hours on end without getting tired of it. So I'm going to study and practice and hopefully one day I'll be good.

I don't even give a fuck anymore if I can't get a full-time art gig; even if I can just do freelance on the side and work at the library forever, that would be cool.

That's an amazing painting, Morgan! The left eye is looking so much better.

One thing you can do to find mistakes in your work is to look at its reflection in a mirror, or if you're going digital, flip it around or whatever you call it in your software of choice. You'll notice a lot of neat stuff you can work over this way.

I'm glad I can be of help.

I am a loyal slave to the arts! My forte is easily writing, but I draw every once in a while to help me visualize concepts for my work. That or I just doodle during breaks at work.

I used to draw portraits using 2H, 2B and 6B pencils, but for some reason I stopped and now I think I have to relearn how to do seamless shading and all that anally meticulous stuff. Ah well! Right now I just focus on comic/anime/cartoon style.

BTW. Another neat trick to figure out the shading of a picture is to squint at it. Really! This way you'll find all the tiny variations in hue and add far more depth to your pieces. I found this was most useful when doing skin.

I think it's important to be able to make things look true-to-life. I'm not striving for perfect photorealism by any means; while that's always impressive to see, at the same time I can't help but think, if they wanted something that looked like a photo, why didn't they just take a fucking picture?

I'm just trying to build up a foundation and get to the point of understanding the human body and proportions, so that when I try to experiment and do stylized or surreal stuff, it will look better.
