What I don't understand is why people leave them ON.

This shit eats 300-700 watts per hour!

If the computer isn't doing something, serving some purpose being on, like downloading something or rendering video, then what the fuck? What the fuck are you doing? Are you too lazy to wait the 30 seconds it will take the thing to boot up when you come back in 10 hours?

Mine is in my bedroom, and I can't stand the sound, either. So it's really unpleasant to leave it on even when I need to download something massive.

Plus the heat is a nightmare in the summer.

I THINK I'LL SHORTEN THE LIFE OF THIS ASSEMBLY OF DUST-GATHERING, ELECTRICITY-SUCKING COMPONENTS THAT BOTH GENERATE HEAT AND ARE SENSITIVE TO IT, AND MOST OF WHICH HAVE PARTS THAT SUFFER FROM MECHANICAL WEAR AS A DIRECT AND UNAVOIDABLE CONSEQUENCE OF MERELY BEING ON, BY RUNNING SAID ASSEMBLY FOR 24 HOURS A DAY.

THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA.
