It seems about 2/3 of the vegans I know are smokers and heavy drinkers.
Then again, most of them are Anarcho-Syndicalist punks or douchebag hipsters. |

You live in a region smart enough to have anarcho-syndacilists vegans as proverbial dregs?
You're not from the heartland, let me tell you! (Upper midwest doesn't count) |

Vegans are not all that bright. More than they know is dependent on animals but it is to such a massive scale I guess they would just have to die to live by their own standards. |

I live in Atlanta, which is a very strange amalgamation of nigga, hipster liberal, and psychotic redneck. It's a great town.
And yeah, I was vegetarian for 10 years. After traveling to the Middle East- where essentially I had to eat animals or starve- I realized that vegetarianism/veganism is mainly a First World trend and that if I want to further travel the world outside of North America and Western Europe, I better suck it up and eat anything that's put in front of me. Yeah, veganism sucks. |

It is just that anything humans will do will negatively effect animals but most of the Vegans up here are also the straightedge hardcore kind so they just have to constantly 1up each other. |

This isn't the first time I have heard Atlanta as being described as more liberal than one would think, but americans think Austin is liberal so fuck them and fuck you |

My favorite thing in the world is extremely health-conscious people who die at a young age even as bacon-gnashing smokers live to 120. |

They're still doing something that is pretty much universally good for the rest of the world. The fact that a way of life isn't possible in the middle east is not a good basis for making decisions about your own life. Do you swear off freedom too because it's so hard to come by there?
John I get the impression a lot of fat redneck fuckbags feel somehow threatened and implicitly shamed by vegetarianism and stuff like that, and certainly there are very self-righteous vegetarians and vegans, but that's no need to let loose with "We actually use animals for a lot of stuff" I mean for god's sake, nobody deserves to have the rug pulled out from under them like that. _________________ "Cogito ergo sum (I think therefore I am)" Plato

Matt, what do you require of a city to meet your standards of liberalness
What exactly are you looking for in a liberal American city? _________________ "Cogito ergo sum (I think therefore I am)" Plato

ALDP: you slightly misunderstand me. I'm saying that my travels outside of the West- and studying sub-Saharan African and East Asian cultures- have made me see that vegetarianism is actually an exception outside of religious orders (Hindus/Buddhists/etc). A vegan friend just got back from Brazil, and he nearly starved for a week until he finally gave in to eating meat just to get by (even in Rio).
Also, Austin is a horrible, right-wing-addled town. Such an example is invalid. |

It is impossible for a first-world human being to live in any way such that their mere existence does not encourage or directly cause some degree of displacement/suffering, unless they're willing to exist in a sucky fashion that does not include things like cars, computers, clothes, and food.
I certainly adore the cute li'l environmentally and socially concerned San Franciscans who nonetheless have children. Because hey, it's not like a thousand of your children collectively are going to have a catastrophic socio-environmental footprint on the planet you "care" so much about.
Don't worry, you'll be able to think of a way to mentally rationalize what is actually nothing more than your selfish, ravenous genetic craving to procreate. And after all your special little bundle is just one person.
It's like my "environmental" bosses, one of whom is sure to use both sides of the paper when he prints out every fucking thing of the slightest interest to him. I can't remember the last time I printed something. Or the other guy who drove a biodiesel car until it became inconvenient. Meanwhile, Chris Psaros?? Drive???
I'm one of the best environmentalists I know, and I'm not even trying. I don't even give a shit! |
