Asteroids: THE MOVIE |

Universal has won a four-studio bidding war to pick up the film rights to the classic Atari video game "Asteroids." Matthew Lopez will write the script for the feature adaptation, which will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
In "Asteroids," initially released as an arcade game in 1979, a player controlled a triangular space ship in an asteroid field. The object was to shoot and destroy the hulking masses of rock and the occasional flying saucer while avoiding smashing into both.
As opposed to today's games, there is no story line or fancy world-building mythology, so the studio would be creating a plot from scratch. Universal, however, is used to that development process, as it's in the middle of doing just that for several of the Hasbro board game properties it is translating to the big screen, such as "Battleship" and "Candyland." |

They do massive brand recognition surveys to value these redundant movie concepts (hence the bidding war). Plus Joe awesome with a suntan and meth in his system can do a better job to convince a rich, old movie producer that this is an awesome idea better than you can convince him that he's actually completely disconnected with reality, and the project is a giant train built to ride off a cliff.
Nobody actually thought Michael Bay was in his right mind when got into the whole Transformers thing...
but.... ASTEROIDS? What the fuck? Please let this be an Onion article... _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL1oU6fH25w |

I still can't believe they have the rights to Candyland. What's that gonna be like? Another Willy Wonka style film? |

There is no reason why Asteroids can't be a good movie.
Premise: spaceship gets caught in some kind of shitty situation with giant floating rocks that it must destroy to survive. This is a classic man vs. nature story.
I mean, it might sound dumb on the surface, but there are lots of ways that anything involving space and spaceships can be made to work.
Candyland, however. |

The worst part of this is the fact that there were apparently four studios who wanted the rights to make the movie. |
