I knew it was crap from day one.

Java applets are the best embedded application system that we have. They're certainly less buggy than flash and heavy Javascript.

Java crashing is usually the fault of the developer, whereas Flash will randomly crash with pretty much anything.

Embedding an application in a webpage is a pretty bad idea, though. Something like web start is much better.

Yeah, it's not and you only think that because Java has incredibly bad PR compared to pretty much any other platform or programming language.

If you were aware how often your system was running slowly because of flash, and how often it was responsible for crashing your browser then you'd think very differently (it's usually responsible for nearly all browser crashes).

If it was clear that whatever software you used was written in C++ or Visual Basic, you'd be complaining all the time about it.

Instead whenever a program performs poorly people either blame the wrong thing because the responsible party is unclear (blaming Firefox for Flash being total shit), or they blame the programmer. Only with Java do people blame the platform instead of the inept programmers for creating whatever it is that is sucking.

Flash has its ups and downs, but it's also responsible for Flash video, which is easily the single best thing to happen to the Web in the last half decade.

Would you like to go back to the days of 20-minute downloads of minute-long QuickTime and .wmv files? Or a world without YouTube/Hulu?

I also don't like how everything freezes to a halt for Java to open when you hit a webpage with a Java applet embedded in it. I've hated that since the beginning of time, and it's less of a problem now with computers being faster, but it's still bad.

Flash video is actually complete garbage. From a consumer perspective it only has disadvantages as compared to straight video files, and all of the benefits you talk about are a result of an improvement in codecs, hardware and so on, and not due to Flash.

It's very fast with Java 6. It would have been very fast back in 1996 if Microsoft wasn't a huge asshole company. It also only ever took a long time the first time Java was loaded, so it wouldn't have been an issue in the first place if it was used for anything other than silly text effects.

Hulu isn't available outside of the US, so that's not even a benefit for me. Youtube is literally streaming mpeg files and whatnot into a Flash front-end.

You would be surprised, Christopher, a lot of things run on Java. On Windows it's pretty shit, though. Runs better on Unix and Linux based OS or in it's own dedicated space from what I've seen. But yeah, Java is everywhere and it's not going away.

Flash video (VP6) will be eventually phased out when more hardware and software can play High Profile x264 without fuss. Flash supports it now though. Hulu uses the codec for the HQ and falsely named HD offerings.
