The media coverage of the Air France crash is really annoying. They said right at the beginning that there would be no survivors, but they have never actually bothered explaining why. They always say they have no idea how the plane crashed, so, how the hell do they know there's no survivors if they don't know what happened?
They also refuse to describe the condition of the recovered bodies "out of respect for the victims' families" but I want to know all the gory details! Were their bodies half eaten by sharks? Were their eyeballs bugging out of their sockets from decompression like in Total Recall?
This not talking about the state of the bodies out of respect is a bunch of bullshit. A week ago I read a news story where this guy was out fishing with his son, and he found the dead body of a missing little girl in a block of concrete. He graphically described how bad the smell was and how there were flies swarming around her. So that's fine, but when it comes to plane crash victims ... nooooo, we can't talk about how the poor passengers had their bodies mangled, and their faces were permanently frozen with grotesque expressions of unfathomable pain, horror, and woe for winning the lottery by hitting the 1 in 11 million odds of dying in an airline crash! |

They probably said that there were no survivors because the radar blip that tracked the giant, hurtling metal tube they were aboard disappeared over a large body of water, and being that the radar blip disappeared, they could assume that it then plunged into said water at several hundred miles per hour, which is very hard to survive.
As for the condition of the bodies, how often are bodies described? |

"Tedious political dissenters" is actually a really good phrase to describe you. |

Maybe the plane was somewhat intact until it got to a fairly low altitude, and a passenger fell out while clutching a life raft, you don't know that!
If it's as easy a conclusion as you say that there's no survivors, that's fine, but why not explain that in the news story? Instead we get "Duh, they lost contact with an airplane over the ocean today. There won't be any survivors." |

I can understand not mentioning the state of the bodies but I can't understand providing a justification for doing so unless there is something horrible they don't want us to know about this. |

There was another big plane crash, and the only survivor was a 12 year old girl. That has to be embarrassing for the people who died. Haha, the little girl was stronger than you!
She also gets a cool back-story for the rest of her life. |

I think Roy is beginning to understand that there is no such thing as "standards in journalism".
We live in a world where you have to pass a complex certification program to slap wet tarmac on walls but need nothing to handle and disperse internationally-sensitive information. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL1oU6fH25w |

What annoys me the most is that newspapers almost never do their own reporting, they just copy and paste AP articles. This means that if I try going to different news sites to get a different take on a story (which is what I did to try and get a god damn explanation why there aren't any survivors of Air France), I just see the exact same article everywhere. |
