Post     So they're remaking DBZ (seriously)

It starts on Japanese TV April 4th.

It's not exactly a remake, but it is more or less.

They're going to turn it into 16x9 (real 16x9, not cropped bullshit), redub it with all the original voice actors who are not dead, add some digital effects, and edit it down to about 100 episodes.

100 episodes! They're going to cut two thirds of it (in other words, make it actually decently-paced), probably whittling it down only to what's in the manga with no filler whatsoever.

I always thought that something like this would be a good idea.

I'm assuming the "digital effects" will be to do stuff like correct Vegeta's colors when he first appears.

And maybe make SSJ more badass.

Also, they're redoing the sound effects. I don't know if they'll use the same music or not.

I dont know why no one mentioned the new season of Ippo in this forum. I almost feel like I'm missing something. Did someone watch it and it sucked or something?

I knew this, but I didn't say anything because nobody seemed to care about the new DBZ OVA.

They better not cut out Gohan Makes A Friend!

The art of the new DBZ OVA made it too gay-looking for me to care about.

I guess I should watch it though.

I wonder if the Japanese are reacting to this in the same way Americans reacted when George Lucas decided to digitally remaster Star Wars.

By that I mean the most pointlessly preachy episode of Southpark ever.

Does the new Ippo series pick up where the first one left off?

No idea, I'm hoping someone else will come in and mention it, without spoiling it or anything

PunkAsss, nobody with any sense is going to react that way.

The TV series is 291 episodes long in spite of the artist's original vision, not because of it.

Anime based on currently-running manga are basically an exercise in clever stalling. Take all of that shit out and it's going to be a lot easier to watch.

Maybe too easy...

I've sort of committed myself to watching DBZ once every decade or so.

This version is going to make that a lot easier to do.

Then again, I guess part of the process is suffering through Bulma vs. the Namek crabs and Garlic Jr. Part of my maturation in life was to realize that watching DBZ shouldn't necessarily be enjoyable.

Claiming you watch something once every decade or so would only be interesting if you were 90, not at an age where "every decade" is probably only two decades (if that).

IF they make the five minute Goku / Freezer fight scene under thirty episodes long, I might actually get excited and feel like I can rewatch the whole series and show it people who have never scene it.

More than half of the Japanese cast is literally elderly at this point. And from the clips I just watched of the OVA, you can hear it in their voices.

They'd better crank this out!

This is a tremendously good idea since watching DBZ in its entirety is actual torturous.

And yes, the new Ippo season picks up after the last one, specifically after the OAV where Ippo fought Sanada. It's pretty good. The animation is BETTER and the pace seems to be quicker, but the new music isn't as good.

DBZ fans are way too purist.

Just get new voice actors. It will be fun.

Let's not make this another Rolling Stones reunion tour.
