I have a habit of taking a sound file and making it go from all the way left to all the right and back over and over, sometimes on beat, sometimes not, and it usually just takes away from the song.

I think the sound effect is just completely isolated to one speaker (My right, your left) and that almost always sounds obnoxious if it isn't properly balanced out by something in the opposite channel.
