Virus checkers are usually better at telling you if you have a virus than a person that lives many miles away and has not even seen your computer.

It's probably just your mouse, though. Getting rid of ball mice has really improved their reliability, because it reduced the moving parts, but there are still mouse wheels, which are often problematic.

I don't understand why a basic antivirus/antispyware engine with a definition library downloaded through Windows Update isn't part of Windows by default.

They have an anti-spyware tool, now.

Their anti-virus service is not free. Making it free would raise all sorts of anti-trust issues that they probably wouldn't be able to get away with.
