Native Americans made terrible slaves, and would simply run away back to their communities. And you couldn't own the children of indentured servants, nor cheat them out in their contracts and expect more Europeans to sign up.

Chattel slavery was common in African countries long before it was brought to the Americas. There wasn't enough good farming land in Africa, so the rich and powerful (Big Men and kings) controlled labor (as lords and kings in Europe controlled their land). The Europeans stumbled into the African slave trade, and exploited it. The Americans adopted the slave system and then "racialized" it.

In the US, slavery wasn't as deadly a practice as in the Caribbean, Brazil, or other places where they produced sugar cane, though it was probably more inhumane. The US didn't need to have a fresh supply of slaves coming in to replace those who died in highly dangerous agricultural situations, and many in the US learned to farm slaves like cattle. Thus there was a demand for women as slaves, where in Brazil, Haiti, or Cuba, women were useless in sugar cane production and the majority of slaves were men. The profits made from sugar cane was so high, that the insane death rate was made negligible, economically speaking. I wish I had my books with me, so I could share the numbers. We're talking about millions of slaves at higher numbers than would ever be brought to the United States.

While racism does exist on the islands and in the rest of the Americas, it is in the US where it flourished, possibly because of this breeding aspect. Also, the more the North wanted to end slavery, the more the South seemed to view slavery in racial terms. Most likely the white Southerners felt threatened by the North, and poor white Southerners could use slavery as a comparison to which they could at least feel superior to. Thus the rich in the South exploited race to insure they had cheap labor on their farms, while the poor exploited race to make themselves feel at least culturally significant.

Another interesting fact is that slavery caught on more in the South then the North because Africans had a hard time adapting to the colder climate and would suffer from more diseases. This was the opposite for the Europeans, who suffered in the hot climates closer to the equator. This is another reason why it was more profitable to use Africans as slaves in the American South, the islands, Central America, and South America.

Miscegenation became more of an issue in the US, given the whole breeding thing. It was less an issue in places like Brazil or Haiti, since most slaves didn't even survive long enough to have children, and since most of the slaves were men (sometimes as high as 90%, with female slaves reserved as household servants) and thus it would difficult to maintain "racial purity."

Also, its interesting to note that slaves going to non-US destinations more often retained their African heritage longer (tribe identity, language, customs), since there was a continual influx of fresh slaves. Also, especially in the Catholic colonies, slaves were allowed (to an extent) to keep their culture, language, and even sometimes lived in slave towns (sugar plantations were fucking huge). It was very different in the US.
