I require help! (aka this thread is about Fantasia) |
|

It's that time of year and I need help sifting through the wide array of Fantasia movies available to me. Last year you ladies and gentlemen were quite helpful so I summon you again to help with these buried gems.

Here are my reviews for the below movies. But if you dont want to know anything about them by reading them, then at least know that I considered all three great movies.
1. [REC]
2. No Mercy for the Rude
3. Alone
I also noticed "Stuck". I havent seen it, but he is behind the horror classic Re-animator. And I've seen most of his movies and most of them are great, and this one is supposed to be one of his best. |

I recommend Alone, Sukiyaki Western Django, A Tale of Legendary Libido, Adrift in Tokyo, and Tokyo Gore Police.
Negative Happy Chainsaw looks interesting, but i haven't been able to download it yet. |

Oh god, Sukiyaki Western Django looked so rocking until it said the words "Takashi Miike". I might give it a chance anyways, but lord I'm worried.
No Mercy for the Rude and Tokyo Gore Police seem promising as well. I'll probably see them as well.
[Rec] looks neat and certainly got a lot of praise, but I can't really watch horror movies non-ironically. It's just not my thing. Same for Alone.
Negative Happy Chainsaw and Adrift in Tokyo seem a little too sentimental for my liking as well.
Thanks for the suggestions, MADali and Potatoes! Keep them coing if you spot anything else. |

About horror movies, I should have pointed out that I rather enjoy slashers if they're well done. It's more the creepy supernatural type of horror movie that's popular today that doesn't do anything for me.
Here's 20 movies that I'll likely cut down to 10 when I actually buy the tickets.
- All The Boys Love Mandy Lane
- Tokyo Gore Police
- The Rebel
- Trailer Park of Terror
- Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer
- DJXL5's Hellzapoppin Zappin’ Party
- Genius Party
- Ex-Drummer
- Gachi Boy: Wrestling With a Memory
- Black Belt
- Dance of the Dead
- Robo Rock
- Repo! The Genetic Opera
- A Colt is my Passport
- Idiots and Angels
- Stuck
- Sukiyaki Western Django
- No Mercy For the Rude
- Pig Hunt
Advice is still appreciated since I'm going to cut a lot and probably add some more. |

Well, the Sukiyaki Django movie is easily downloadable if you want. The majority of the cast are Japanese natives that speak terrible english, so a few parts were difficult to understand.
You probably wouldn't like Alone if you don't like creepy supernatural thrillers with a twist. The Legendary Libido movie is a wacky Korean sex comedy set 200 years ago, so that's probably a no too. Adrift in Tokyo is just a feel-good comedy-drama set in Tokyo.
I didn't realize you had to buy tickets for each individual movie! |

| Yeah, that sounds like a less risky option given Miike's track record and the fact that it's one of the opening movies. I might go for Bad Biology instead since it seems so retarded and plays at midnight where you encounter all the crazies. |

Sukiyaki Western Django
**** out of five
I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Takashi Miike's track record is a tragically terrible one so the fact he strung something so entertaining together is nothing short of a miracle. The movie is spaghetti western style complete with horn music blaring in a background at passionate moments (played by natives, which begs to question if the Japanese really think that Indians would bring brass instruments to their scalpings). Most of the movie is played as over the top and silly, but there are some very good gunfighting scenes. Considering how modern westerns like the 3:10 to Yuma and The Assassination of Jesse James have been much more subdued than those old Leone movies, it's a fresh bit a nostalgia.
The kicker is that the whole movie is spoken in English by a completely Japanese cast. Hilarity in pronunciation differs from cast member to cast member, but there's no one who is particularly bad though there are a few lines that you be incomprehensible without subtitles. Quentin Tarantino shows up just to show what a huge nerd he is.
This is out on DVD already, so it's definitely worth a rent or download.
For no real reason, Gorden Liu was present and got up and said a few words to a roaring ovation. He had nothing to do with the movie but was just chilling out apparantly. I think he was presenting this kung fu movie the next day which I had to miss unfortunately. ;_; |
