I will just warn you that if you play a Paladin, that will be a green light for me to create awesome situations in which your character will have to do things that the rest of the party won't agree to.

I'm interested in this monk class. What are the pluses and minuses?

Monks are neat in that a lot of their abilities are innate, and don't require you to have shit. A wizard needs a spellbook, and a fighter needs a weapon, but a monk is basically complete without any extra equipment.

Paladins are a great class and everything, but if you don't roleplay one correctly (I mean, you definitely could if for some reason you find it appetizing to roleplay a Fallen Paladin) there will be consequences.

I guess I should stress this, only play if you are serious. I understand that it's great to be hilarious and, HILARIOUS moments will arise, but if you try to fuck around I'll just kill you or turn your character into a level 1 fighter named Gimp Mask who's special ability is shitting on themselves constantly.

Monks appear to be able to use more special abilities if armorless. That could be dangerous, as I suppose they're more of a close-combat class.

Well, obviously. But they get stuff to make up for that. You'll also want a high dex score and high con.

But yeah, you should probably get on AIM and talk to Theldorrin and Rice.

I've never really played these games other than a few Star Wars RPing games when I was 14, but I've always wanted to try at least once.

I would be serious, Magic Juan! Though not so serious that I try to speak Elvish or something.

Which is pretty bloated, slow and ridiculously elaborate. If you want to make a more complicated character you need to use it.

What are you using for a starting level, and how are character abilities to be chosen? I recommend a point buy system since it means it's not random (with all the problems that entails). Redblade allows for 15, 22, 25, 28, or 32 points, with 25 being labeled 'normal'.

Also, are you allowing psionics?

Oh, and I'm guessing you're having clerical magic work normally? Like a cleric of Paladine still has his clerical powers when on Greyhawk, for example?
