I guess I should offer commentary of some sort.

Both of us opened with a Komoku. That's when you do the move that's not on one of the star points (the four corner dots), but instead one space closer to the edge.

There are 8 spots that qualify on the board (16-R is also one, for example, and it follows that there are 2 for each corner).

The opening moves are designed to lay claim to territory. It's easier to claim territory in the corner, since you only have to form two borders, as opposed to the 3 you'd need along the side, or the 4 in the centre.
