Post     Product placement in Daily Show/Colbert Report

I realize this is like the 4th or 5th post I've made about these shows.

Jon gave McCain or somebody a Fresca in one episode and took out a Lunchables during his interview with the Secretary of Education. Colbert had a couple episodes talking about Kraft's "Crumbelievable" ad campaign and applying the adjective to other stuff.

The placement is never positive enough for it to seem like an endorsement, but they do it an awful lot without acknowledging that they do it a lot, for it to just be a joke making fun of product placement.

That's how I feel anyway

This is actually a very interesting THINGY in movies and TV. Where do you draw the line between product placement and just making jokes or plot elements involving common real world products?

On the commentary track for Back to the Future II Bob Gale talks about how much shit the movie got for all the supposed product placement for Pepsi and Pizza Hut and whatnot.

But really, it was just written that way. They were gags. In Pepsi's case, a running gag (from when he asks for a "Pepsi Free" in the first movie and the guy is like "Huh?." Haha, then he goes to the future and doesn't understand THEIR Pepsi!)

It wasn't product placement at all.

The most egregious piece of product placement I've ever seen, so blatant and terrible that it is the SINGULAR IMAGE that always pops up in my head when I hear the phrase "product placement," was in Austin Powers 3 when Ms. Frownface or whatever her name was has a big TACO BELL bag (of a sort that doesn't even exist in real life) and sets it down on a table right in the fucking middle of the frame, and it is in no way a joke or plot point.

And what about Taladaga Nights? That could have also been an easy way to have product placement but not have anyone be bothered by it.

The worst product placement is by Apple computers, since they stick there shit all over the place.

The thing is that US Robotics actually named themselves after the fictional corporation that Asimov invented.

Books tend not to have product placement in them, though. Because that can really date them.

It's weird how hard TV shows try to make us believe everybody owns a Mac. How did they even set up that deal?

The Office had some really obvious placement for Staples once.

The Island was pretty horrible about product placements as well.

Books don't have much product placement, but I've read ones where characters would be awkwardly compared to celebrities as if to say "MAYBE THAT PERSON COULD PLAY THE CHARACTER IF SOMEBODY WANTED TO BUY MOVIE RIIIIIIGHTS"

What about the whole thing with the Jimmy Dean Pancake and Sausage on a Stick (chocolate chip flavour)?

That wasn't flattering in the least!

The worst part in when they try to incorporate products into a comedy bit just before the commercial break.

And at the end of every one a dead president is somehow enjoying the cold, crisp taste of a Bud Lite.
