Post     The Internet

A nostalgic thread about the good old days is a very Chris Psaros thing to do, that is, a very normal feeling to have, but I've been wanting to complain for a while now.

The internet sort of sucks now. Its probably much more useful than it has ever been, given that you can find almost any kind of information in google, wikipedia is great, facebook lets you find whomever you want, youtube has all sorts of videos, find reviews of all kinds of products, IMDB has information on any movie you can think of, torrents let you download anything easily, and so on.

But its all big corporations now. When you do a search on google, only the first few results matter. You can't check out page 2 or 20 to find some hidden gems. Its all gargabe, aside from the top few sites that provide us with whatever we need.

And I really hate the SEO mindset. Every site is carefully planned and managed to somehow rank better in google, usually linking to each other, in some masterful grand sheme of google rankings. And somehow, probably because youtube ranks higher or maybe its because people are dumb shit now, a lot of instructions are on youtube instead of in written form. If I want to read some guide for a certain issue or workaround in my PC, reading "click start" is easier than watching a video where a mouse goes to start and clicks it.

Even comedy sites are giant multi staff corporation like companies.

In those days, it was easy to make an impact and feel like you are making a small contribution. All you had to do was make a site, make it reasonably enjoyable, and you'd have a decent number of visits. The new generation of kids, aside from a few minor talented geniuses, won't feel that. But they don't really notice this, because big corporation websites already make use of their creativity within the framework of their sites, such as having users make a video for youtube, or make posts in facebook, or edit a wikipedia page, or try to have large amount of credit in a private torrent site, and etc.

Blah blah blah

I agree with everything there except his stuff about camgirls. He makes it like it was an extension of the creativity that existed, but it wasn't. While guys had to find creative ways to attract attention (content, etc), girls only had to look decent and show some flesh. Camgirls was only about receiving attention, without really doing much, which is basically most of the internet now.

It also kind of sucks that we're not part of the present generation anymore. It was kind of nice for a while. We're not only the previous generation now, but probably the previous previous generation.

I basically agree 100% with what MADali said.

Also, I don't expect it to continue to grow more useful. I expect more and more paywalls to start going up. Plus the walled gardens are pretty much garbage as well.

I hope by the time I'm 60 that the Internet won't be total shit and I'll have to go back to doing real stuff.

Post     Re: The Internet

By the time we are 60, the Internet WILL be total shit and the young generation would have found something new and cool but we'd be too old and stupid to know anything about it.

I wouldn't mind though, because once I hit 60, I'm becoming a complete opium user. That is, if they exist in such frequency by then.

Yeah there's a lot of stuff I want to do when I'm 60. I want to buy a cocker spaniel and start smoking opium.

You mention a cocker spaniel a lot, why don't you just get one?

One of the things I hate about the internet today, and I think I mentioned this before, are CAPTCHAS. This shit is getting harder and harder by the day

CAPTCHAS are getting harder and bots are getting better at cracking them. Soon computers will be better able to prove themselves to be humans, than actual humans.

I think what MADali said is about 2% of the fucking book I could write on the topic of the Internet being shitty and hard now, at least as far as trying to create things/get traffic. But yeah. Right on, MADali!

Honestly though, as a user, all in all, it's probably better now. There is so much goddamn more content and information than there was 10 years ago.

You really can't compete with it anymore though, not as an individual. I see funny webcomics, blogs with fantastic writing, even really good bands, etc. etc., none of which can find an audience simply because there's too much Internet. Nobody can gain a following anymore because there's too much to follow. (That is, unless you have some mega-specific niche that nobody is doing anything with, and even then your potential audience is only like 10 people because the niche is so small.)

Everyone is so goddamn good at everything now! It's crazy. Brilliance and awesomeness is so commonplace that nobody bats an eyelash when they see it (ever try to impress Reddit?)

In the late 90s, when 17 out of 100 people in the developed world had Internet access, AND you actually had to have technical skill to publish something (no CMSes), it was a lot easier to do something that wouldn't just be buried by all the other Internet.

I don't agree with that. I think it's much easier to market quality content than it is to generate it.

Reddit is pretty easily impressed.

THANK YOU FORMAL SWEATPANTS.

Especially for using Matthew Inman SPECIFICALLY as your example of somebody who effortlessly gets 10 billion views every time he blinks. I mean, don't get me wrong, good for him, but fuck.

Chris, do you not understand that the same factor in there being more talent on the internet also means there is a greater audience for the internet? Maybe you need to stop defining success as the big fish in a little pond bullshit you achieved as part of the DBZ web community.

I actually think Chris was more of a middle-sized fish in a big pond. DBZ was one of the biggest things on the web for those years, but he was no Da Black Goku.
