Post     That one joke from The Simpsons

You know that episode that takes place in the future, and Krusty the Clown says, "What's the difference between Pakistan and a pancake? I don't know any pancakes that got nuked by India!" when no one laughs, he says, "What, too soon?"

Now, "too soon" has become this minor meme that people say whenever somebody makes a crack about a tragic current event, like the Japan earthquake. The thing is though, I think people misinterpreted the joke! Krusty wasn't asking if enough time had elapsed since Pakistan got nuked for it to be acceptable to make fun of. He was referring to comic timing. His delivery was too soon.

So what do you think?

I don't think The Simpsons has anything to do with "too soon" being used in that way.

Nor is the problem a "minor" one.

Something more PERTINENT would be the Lullapalooza episode.

Hipster 1: "Oh hey, it's the cannon-ball guy. He's 'cool.'"

Hipster 2: "Are you being sarcastic, man?"

Hipster 1: "Oh I don't even know anymore."

'Cause, you know, we have reached such great depths of meta that no one really knows if they're being sincere. IE, Psaros! Perfect example! Just what the fuck is that guy talking about? He's wrapped up in so many layers of sarcasm you can't distinguish an aspect of ACTUAL HUMAN THOUGHT through his messages!

What has sarcasm wrought!!!aldp

Those aren't hipsters in that episode, those are slackers. Learn the difference.

Anyone can be a slacker, but when you're a slacker and enjoy music, you've come under the column of a hipster. I know that might have not been what they were called WAAAAY back then, but come on.

It was saying the youth of today are wicked ironic, to the point they don't know what's real.

I don't recall anybody going, "Huh duh, too soon man!" before 2000, but at the very least, that episode compounded the "problem".

Which brings me to another thing. There's this period of Simpsons episodes that you can make references to with the expectation that everybody will get it. Once you delve into sufficiently modern episodes though, that expectation gets more and more dicey. Finding this line is as difficult as, and correlated with, finding the moment when the show began its decline.

Krusty is supposed to be a parody of a aging, hack entertainer. 'Too soon' is a precept of allll jokes everywhere. People are just waiting for the relevancy of horrible tragedies to expire so they can crack jokes, a la Holocaust (how du fit jews in thing plac ie n oven lol) It's a foundation of post-modern humor.

I wonder what sorts of 15th/16th-season equivalents of Frank Grimes there are but that nobody would be bold enough to reference now, since an agreement seems to have been made within the collective unconsciously circa 1997 that, moving forward, all Simpsons references that could be expected to be understood in mixed company would stop at right around that point in the series.

If I say DENTAL PLAN in a room in Dubai, I doubt anyone would get it, and probably be a bit confused, because I dont think there is any company that actually gives dental plans.

Somebody born in 1990 had three animated sitcoms on the air by the time they were 10. There isn't anything mysterious about the Simpsons losing quotability as it went, and also people my age (23) were definitely quoting the show past 1997.
