Also my roommate last year watched Bones religiously and there was an episode based on this STRUGGLE. The Billy character even had an American flag tie!

It doesn't seem like any of these records last very long. Isn't it all based on how much memory any given arcade unit happens to have as to whether they're able to score more points or the game just shuts itself down?

That's kind of it but the reason this record is broken every couple months is that Steve Wiebe and occasionally some other dudes break the record and then Billy Mitchell effortlessly destroys the score before killing off all his extra lives to give Steve Wiebe a chance at breaking it again.

That'll end soon since the theoretical Donkey Kong score ceiling has almost been reached.
