Did anyone ever read these?

It's what the Disney Black Cauldron movie was based on.

I read them when I was a kid after seeing the movie, but you were all too young for the movie, so maybe you never did.

Really, you think we're all too young to have seen an animated movie from the 1980s? Made by Disney? Dumb bitch.

I've read them.

There was also an adventure game based on the Black Cauldron.

They were pretty derivative, like the Lord of the Rings.

Yes, there's a lot of HACKISHNESS to them, but Lloyd Alexander wrote a lot of books, so you kinda have to expect that.

And a lot of the shit that seems cliched to us wasn't as cliched in the mid-60s.

In any case, they're a fuck of a lot more fun/entertaining than LOTR, and the characters are endearing. And as standard fantasy as so much of it is, there are moments that really stand out. Something about the books sticks with you.

I don't think they're quite epic enough to be made into movies, at least not book for book, unless they completely make up some sort of gay ass $100 million dollar-costing set pieces and shoehorn them into the scripts because everything has to be spectacular nowadays.

No, a lot of the cliched stuff in the books has been cliched for quite a few centuries.

Fantasy is like the superhero stuff in that it's much better served with (good) animation.

The game was pretty good, and you could do all sorts of things different from the actual story, which was a nice touch. Al Lowe, the guy that created Leisure Suit Larry, made it for Disney and Sierra. I think he offers it on his website for free download, and it works with DOSBox.

Theldorrin, there really isn't anything that isn't derivative.

I mean, if you write a fantasy story, it's going to have dwarves and evil magical objects and shit. You can't really help that.

It's a question of degrees and it not being called on it.

Also, dwarves and evil magic objects aren't even pervasive in fantasy. Read more.

I'm not liking the last one as much as the others.

It's all BATTLES.

Battles are boring.

I like whimsical adventure!

It's alright though, because if I remember correctly, the three witches come back at the end with quite a TWIST!

I'll stick around for that.
