Actually in America it's illegal for former employers to tell anyone anything about when you worked for them except for how long you worked there and how much you made there.

I'm pretty sure.

I think employment laws are a state issue.

I think in some cases they can answer a question like, "Would you re-hire this person," but that's about it.

Luckily the jobs I've had the most problems with are large corporations with huge HR offices that deal with that shit and seem to remain fairly tight-lipped about details surrounding former employees.

Which is why I've never told any potential employer the truth about why I was fired from AIG, because unless I tell them there's no way they could ever know.
