How do the spam/dummy account-makers even find the board? |
|
|
Lexy and I were sitting around trying to figure this out a few days ago.
It really doesn't make any sense.
First, we're not indexed on search engines, and, yeah, that.
That should do it! |

Well there's a few possibilities.
1. This board was visible via search at some earlier point in time, and now it's part of massive spam lists of PHPBBs (and forums in general).
2. The board is in a standard forum location for this domain, so the spambots would regularly looks around at example.com/forum/ to see if there's a web forum there.
3. They spider sites on their own, independently of Google, and came upon the forum (since you can readily view it via http://ftusa.org/).
It's probably a combination of the three, just as there are multiple ways that they harvest email addresses (curse the advanced bots that have a javascript engine built in). |

I've found that no email address is safe anymore.
I get spam at addresses that no human eyes have ever seen, that I've never used for any purpose.
Fuck spam and fuck bots, and fuck the character boxes you have to type shit into, which I'm sure will soon be defeated by some new technology anyway. |

Yeah, captchas are regularly defeated, now.
Spambots have taken to spamming random email addresses, I think. |

| I like how, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, several thousand people around the planet are working absolutely as hard as they can to ruin the Internet. |

| And then there are governments that are trying to ruin the Internet but aren't working very hard at all to do so. |

I have nothing against captchas, its that some websites make them more complex when simple ones dont work, to the point where we will eventually have to type 50 letter long highly ambiguous captchas all the time, and will usually get it wrong the first 3 times
And of course these will be defeated by new technology |
