Reading about this whole Tosh/rape joke EXPLOSION (dur, national a dialogue has sarted) actually led me to a conclusion that surprised me and made me question my standard "tell whatever FUCKING joke you want and fuck people who get offended!!!! FUCK PUSSIES WHO GET OFFENDED!!!!!!!!" attitude.

Generally, without a highly nuanced, well-honed, and contextually-specific joke/setup, men actually probably SHOULDN'T make rape jokes. At least not for an audience that includes women who are strangers, where the man doesn't have a personal relationship with the women to whom he's telling the jokes, such that there's an understanding between all parties.

The reason is that rape is pretty much gender-specific. It's this fucking horrible thing that happens almost only to women, and where men have an undeniable, basically unfair privilege in that they generally don't have to deal with rape on any level and almost certainly never will.

That is, unless we decide we want to rape somebody! Haha! Am I right?

See that, right there? That joke I just made is fine (not just because it was exquisitely timed and masterfully rendered, the way that I was talking about before) because it's directed at just us dudes here, and Morgan and Lexy, and we know them, so it's all good, and rape rape rape.

But when a man gets up in front of a bunch of strangers in a comedy club and does some kind of "haha, rape!!!" thing, it's kind of a "haha, fuck you! Fuck you and this issue that you have to deal with and that I don't!" to the women in the audience.

The thing about women is they don't really have much, so they like to take the few things that are unique to them, and say, "You just don't know!" and make themselves to seem, not necessarily more worthy, but worthy in general.

Take giving birth for example. Excluding the fact they call it a miracle, which means they don't know the meaning of words, but they act like its so painful so, by extension, it should mean they experience something painful that we wouldn't be able to handle, so we should appreciate them more. In today's worlds, most women would go through it maybe once or twice in their lives, and I'd say that withstanding a few hours of pain out of millions of hours in a lifetime isn't that big of deal.

Basically, what I'm saying is that rape is probably not that big of a deal.

I've actually thought about this a bit since the controversy or whatever and I've decided rape jokes can be funny as long as they're more nuanced than, "Haha, rape!"

Like, the joke Chris made in his original post, the joke isn't about rape, it's about the difference between how men and women perceive rape. All jokes, really, are about context, and if there's no context at all, then you're just being a retard anyway, regardless of the subject. The only major difference between most subjects and touchy ones like rape, race, 9/11, etc. is that the context is even more important. You can tell a shitty joke about airplane food and the worst anyone will think is that you're an idiot. If you tell a shitty rape joke, people will assume you're a misogynistic idiot.

I don't usually like rape jokes because most of them are hugely derivative, or just very poorly done shock humour. I don't think anything is off limits for humour though, so long as it ends up being funny.

Also, you should educate yourself, Chris. I believe the amount of rape of men in the US has edged above the amount of rape happening against women (although it's difficult to really know for certain about that shit because of lack of reporting and so on).

And it's pretty silly to act like the vast majority of rape jokes aren't at the expense of men being raped.

The difference between man-rape and woman-rape is that women have to go through their entire lives with the constant, gnawing fear that half of the population has the power, and some small but undetermined percentage of that the inclination, to physically overpower them and rape them at any time, and that this isn't an irrational fear but more like a 1-in-3 type thing.

Man rape is more circumstantial. For men, it's not a thing that just exists as a constant variable hanging over everything.

(Also, there's no fucking way that man rape is as common as woman rape, so I'd certainly like to see THAT statistic!)

I think of it like this: chimpanzees are way stronger than me, and could fucking annihilate me if they decided to. As it stands now, I'm the strongest and best, so there's nothing to worry about, but what if half the population were chimpanzees? Just fucking super-strong chimps running around everywhere some of whom wanted to put their dick in me by horrible force, and then I went to a comedy club one night and there was a chimp comedian and he made fun of the general situation, and then me specifically? That's fucked up!

I kind of can't believe I'm making these posts but here they are! Maybe living in a college town is getting to me.

A lot of the rape fear is completely irrational, much like how parents are afraid of pedophiles and child abduction.

The vast majority of times that a woman is raped is from someone she knows, for example, and yet a huge amount of the discourse and fear about rape is about stranger danger (Ie. people jumping from bushes or accosting them in elevators).

Of course, living in a college town I would suspect that the stranger danger (as well as rape risk in general) is much higher than normal.

A huge percentage of women rape is due to alcohol consumption, too. As well as much of it being done by serial rapists.

Also, the numbers according to RAINN are 1 in 6, and that's for rape AND attempted rape. Usually when you have higher numbers like 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 that's a result of bad surveys that combine all types of sexual assault, or that include people who have had sex without really wanting to (and by that metric, when someone does chores around the house they're slaves). I'm not sure how reliable the data is that RAINN is using for that 1 in 6, and unfortunately even that survey is only useful for the women because it doesn't consider enveloping to constitute rape (Ie. it's rape if you give oral to a woman without her consent, but not if it's done to a man. And it's not rape if a woman forces you to stick your dick in her, or if anyone forces you to stick your dick in their butt.) Incidentally, the statistics also look very different if you examine the number of people raped or attempted in the last 12 months. Because in this particular survey, even with all sorts of things done to men not being counted as rape, the women are only 3x as high. Which is significantly different from the 1 in 6 and 1 in 33 lifetime numbers.
