Does this seem obviously insensitive to everyone but me? So far none of what I've read has even allowed the possibility that a crazy white man suggesting that a sane black man might like something flavored with watermelon, the most hurtful fruit on Earth, could be interpreted as anything other than trying and failing to slip some secret racism past the censors.

Even the dude in the video just can't believe it. If there were any explanation other than a vulgar display of power and privilege, he would consider that. But there isn't.

We tried with watermelon. We tried to coexist with it, share the planet. But, like, what if there were a fruit called "gunt"? Every single time anyone mentioned it you'd have to waste a little energy trying to decide if you were offended or not. And that would not be worth it.

Even if it was the innocent mistake that the cartoonist is claiming it was, that shit should not have gotten past the editors. The Herald is a Newscorp rag with a long history of racist dog whistle articles about black on white crime, read almost exclusively by mouth-foaming Dads who toss and turn in their sleep over welfare queens and EBT cards, so knowing the context it's pretty hard for me to give them a pass on this.

I checked the comments on the first Herald article I clicked on. This is a pretty accurate representation of their base readership.

It is a display of power and privilege in that, even if it wasn't meant as a racist joke (which even though this apparently isn't; in the right context, it absolutely could be), it shows ignorance and insensitivity to the fact that it never occured to him that a lot of racist jokes still have to do with watermelons - as a white guy he just never has to deal with that under any circumstance unless he's the one making them.

(Here come the Vitos and Chrises saying "Or getting falsely accused of making them, thanks to the PC Police!! Oh fuck I shit all over myself!!!!!!!")

So, even though it was just an innocent little slip of the mind for him because he gets to live in a world free of prejudice day to day, the problem is that it was a failure on his part to recognize that it was also a very blatant red flag for people who don't have that privilege.
