I actually defended that remark and said that she was making a good point in another conversation (not on this forum). I'm a firm believer that criticizing foreign and military policy isn't a criticism of the troops. The whole for or against the troops this is basically just a sleazy tactic that only really stupid people buy into. I'm actually mildly insulted that you think I'd be affected by such things, and you clearly have never read any of my posts you're just arbitratily assigning positions to me based on the miniscule amount you know about my background.

Oh, I actually oppose the troops. I think it's pretty silly to think that you can oppose a military action and support the troops that are engaging in that.

That seems like a big mental disconnect to me.

As an aside, I supported the war in Afghanistan, but now I think it's probably been bungled too badly.

I agree with you about Afghanistan, and I probably would've been willing to support the war in Iraq had we secured and concluded the conflict in Afghanistan first. That said we still probably would've bungled it because of the the American people don't want to fight an all out war, and the president thought we could swoop in establish a pro US democracy with little resistance. Of course he didn't take into account long standing regional conflicts, and severely overestimated our individual troop strength as well as the willingness of the people to support out efforts.

I don't hate the troops because they're just doing their jobs, and for many in the US there is little employment of advancement oppurtunity outside of joining the military. Opposing the war doesn't mean you hate the soldiers involved as honestly they are two different issues. Liberals would be wise to make that clear to avoid the right wing backlash after Vietnam that empowered Reagan and has essentially allowed the Republican party to secure the support of lower class and lower middle class white Americans with little effort.

Additionally I don't have a lot of respect for a man who signs up for the military and then refuses to fight in the war. Agreeing to military service isn't some fancy magic agreement where you get numerous benefits and a shitty job in exchange for entering into your nation's military conflicts if you feel like it. By joining the military you're setting aside your own personal ideologies to take on the will of the military branch for which your serving.

Part of the problem with the US is that instead of having great social programmes, you have a massive welfare programme that's also known as the armed forces.

They're still 100% culpable for all of their actions.

Of course, I'm one of those people that thinks that Canada doesn't need a single person in the armed forces, since the only country that has ever threatened our safety is the United States. And we wouldn't stop them via our armed forces.

Well yes, but we're not talking about people commiting war crimes are we. We're talking about people fighting in a poorly managed quagmire of a war that had essentially no planning. That said, the douchebags responsible for prison abuse are facing criminal charges. I'm sorry, but if someone enters the military he should have to fight for his country when they are engaged in a war. That's not to say he should commit a war crime. I don't condone that, but engaging in combat is a little different than the type of conduct which you're discussing.

I do like how we've completely disregarded the Geneva convention this time around. Although that's more the CIA and the executive branch than anyone.
