I'm wagering it's akin to NWN, where you only have the illusion of that.

Theldorrin is a wrong gay faggot. The only time that they don't give you equipment are parts during the end of the game when you are fighting people whose magical equipment is so mundane so they might not give it to you, but either way, I still remember fighting jobbers with sweet equipment for me to sell.

That's absolute bullshit. In no D&D game ever do they give you the equipment that the characters are wielding(or should properly be wielding). It violates the economics of the game.

You simply don't understand enough about the mechanics of D&D to comment on this.

Each encounter should net you about the same level of treasure that a single one of your characters has. So for a party of four, four encounters should double all of your equipment.

And four such encounters wouldn't raise your level, either. So an encounter of one level higher would give you more than double the equipment.

If they're not appropriately equipped for their level than they're not even a moderate challenge, unless they've been buffed, which is just plain cheating (giving a buff via something that can't be looted, whereas you can't have the same).

Theldorrin is being fucking retarded and I'd get six million boners when an enemy had a weird special ability because it essentially meant you'd get some sweet item after you beat them.

Theldorrin is wrong about the equipment in BG. They do in fact give you what the enemy is equipped with. If you're getting hit with fire arrows the enemy has fire arrows. Grey Wolf hits you with his ice sword in the first game, and you can snag all of Drizzt's equipment in both games if you kill him. The only thing you don't really see is enemies equipped with a lot of miscellaneous weaker magic rings.

You notice their armour class and the respective accessories they're equipped with?

You guys don't understand D&D. The vast majority of equipment, and the majority of good equipment aren't even offensive.

You can easily see the armor class by toggling the thing in options to see all the rolls, and then sometimes I can easily notice the hit threshold and calculate it.

Well they do use various wands (especially at the higher difficulty levels) and a lot of items do come into play. Unfortunately not many trash enemies have magic cloaks or rings, and when you do encounter enemies that do obviously the battle is already more difficult because the enemy is stronger so it might just not get noticed. I do know what you're talking about in RPGS (especially D&D ones), but BG does a better job in general than most games.

I just got Temple of Elemental Evil which is made by Troika, and they almost always do direct representation of equipment (at least you saw it in Fallout), so it'll be interesting to see how this D&D engine handles it. It also is full blown turnbased which will be a nice change.

It's not a flaw with Baldur's Gate, it's a fundamental economic flaw of the D&D system.

D&D cannot allow for a 'fair' game.

No, you're right, but since the BG system functions with enemies being put through the same creation system as the player with the exception of monsters. In theory almost all enemies could be converted to playable characters in particular in 2 and Throne of Bhaal.

BG gets around a fair game by allowing the player to cheese their stats in the beginning of the game.

Temple of Elemental Evil will be interesting because it's basically the only turnbased game to use 3.5's ruleset.

Neverwinter Nights is fucking gay.

Really, I thought being able to cheese items like Wands of Summoning and Fireball, but I guess haviung 18 strength instead of 17 strength is a huge difference at the beginning margin.
