So far this isn't as good as 1000 year door.

I bought the 1000 year door a few days ago, because I'm decades behind everything. But I still haven't played it yet, because I haven't even finished Twilight Princess.

Fuck school so much.

I'm still upset that this didn't come out for the Gamecube.

And that's going to continue until I can actually find a Wii.

You know what they should release? A new Earthbound game. That'd be nice.

Earthboud isn't bad even if it is a tremendously overrated game (it has a lot of stoner humor).

Playing this game it's easy to see that there's no reason that this couldn't have been released on Gamecube (the wiimote is used in a minimum number of functions). It feels very much like they quickly switched this too a Wii title to increase the library of Wii games that don't suck. It has gotten a little better. I like some of the platform elements even if the rpg elements are almost nonexistant (they amount to one level you get +1 attack in the next you get +5 hp, and you can use items). At least the party actually consists of Bowser, Luigi and Peach.

There is, or will soon be, a completed fan translation of Mother 3 for GBA if you really want an Earthbound sequel.

You cause Pokey to lock himself away in a safe that is impossible to open from the inside or outside at the end of Mother 3.

The thousand year door is one of the best Mario games. I can say, that I havn't finished the game because I don't want it to end.

So I just beat this. The game totals about 16 hours if you take your time (although I didn't look for too many secrets) probably a lot less if you rushed through it, the difficulty certainly wouldn't stop you from speeding along.

The difficulty is fucking nonexistant. There is perhaps one or two points where things got slightly more difficult, but frankly, that just means using one healing item instead of none.

The boss of the game while having potential to be interesting because it's a super powered evil Luigi (sort of like the evil Peach boss of Paper Mario Thousand Year Door that's reminiscent of a Sailor Moon villain) ended up just being a crudely drawn Luigi head on top of a faggy Jester body. He's also ridiculously fucking easy for a last boss. As in I think I got hit once the entire battle before I got him trapped in a corner and killed him in under a minute with Bowser.

The boss battles themselves are decent albeit never difficult. There's one that you have to flip to fight which approaches a little difficulty, but it's still a fucking joke.

Flipping in 3d is a gay mechanic because only Mario can do it which often times defeats the purpose of using any of the other character's throughout the game as it's by far used the most for puzzles. Bowser's flame breath while useful is only necessary in about 3 or 4 places, and there are less than 10 jumps in total that require Peach which is kind of amazing considering it's a fucking platformer and how many jumps overall there are. Luigi is kind of nice because of his super jump and his naturally higher jump, but you'll still oftentimes only be using Mario because of the flip mechanic, and you don't get Luigi until chapter 7 of 8 anyway. Against bosses you'll use Bowser since he does double damage (there's one exception to this rule because you have to flip, but that boss is still easy as I mentioned). Basically all characters should have been able to flip, and they should have given Mario a fucking special ability.

The Pixls are kind of neat mechanic in a way essentially providing the game's special attacks. Unfortunately about half of them fucking suck and you'll end up mostly using a two of them after you get them all (the hover platform one because it lets you use Bowser's fire while jumping, and the hammer, they make you use the throwing one for a couple of bosses, but it's shit). It would have been nice to see the one that let's you go paper thin (who's function Peach is basically able to do on her own anyway) and the shrinking one used more, but fuck it, variety is apparently really hard.

A lot of people complained about the large amount of text, but I don't know why. After the initial text crawl the game is pretty empty and lifeless with a few spots being exceptions (I liked Chapter 5 where you helped the Cavemen that were parodies of fratboys, and the part where they make fun of Nerds was alright I guess, most of the humor felt like it was trying way too hard though) and having a decent amount of story, which you'd kind of expect since it's a fucking RPG. What little plot there is amounts to being the most incredibly trite and cliched rpg game plot I've seen in a while. In a lot of ways the game was too dark and serious (for Mario characters anyway) coupled with really forced attempts at humor. There were a lot of references, but most of them wouldn't make sense if you hadn't played the other two Paper Mario games.

The music was forgettable. The one bright spot being the song for the eigth world.

There was hardly any point for this to be on the Wii. The controller is used for a minimum of functions (some faggy pose thing to get extra experience points that I eventually stopped doing, Tippi's tattle ability, and some of the items) all of which could have easily been done on a Gamecube controller. In general the character designs in town and game are far less interesting than those on previous Paper Mario games, and the worlds weren't very impressive (nothing that couldn't have been done on Gamecube). In a lot of ways I think the game would have played better on a gamecube controller, it was pretty clear they were just moving it over to pad the Wii's title list.

All in all I'd describe the game as Symphony of the Night with Mario characters, which sounds a lot better than the game actually is. Level ups just amount to more damage and more hp (no badges or flower points). Pixls and new characters essentially just equal a new movement ability to let you progress. Item attacks exist but are pointless. The flipping mechanic while initially neat gets very tiresome (especially hitting enemies in it). It's a very average game, and if you rent, I'd say rent it because you can easily beat it by the time you have to take it back (probably do the secret shit I didn't bother with too), and I can't see anyone ever needing to play through this a second time. Easily not as good as either of the previous two entries in the Paper Mario series.

Post     Re: Super Paper Mario

Mario games are intended for all audiences. Besides as a point of reference both of the other Paper Mario games were much more difficult. They weren't exactly hard, but at least they were harder than this. The first Paper Mario was very kiddish, but a lot of that was dropped in the sequel (because it was basically the biggest complaint that reviewers had about the first game). Considering this is one of the few games where the main villain actually dies at the end (your characters also go to Hell and heaven at one point), I would hardly call this game as kid oriented as the first game.

That said it's not nearly as good, and that's a fucking retarded complaint anyway. God forbid we judge a game on a level of quality because it's supposedly for fucking children even though it's supposed to be an rpg and it's main character is over twenty years old. Let's just set this on the fucking sales rack next to Mathblaster.

I've never played a Paper Mario game.

Nintendo should have just made the game play like a normal game and ignored the accelerometer. There's nothing about the Wii that requires them to use it for every game, after all.
