I don't really want to get up in people's face about how they grieve, but every time I hear a "softer" alternative to words like "die" and "death" I pass on a little.

It's obviously terrible when someone dies, but you're not sparing anyone from anything by talking about their "passing". "I was in the room when my grandmother passed ..." "Oh whew, I was scared you were going to say something else and cause us both a ton of pain."
