I'm thinking about burning all the new season box sets of DBZ, but that 16:9 crop is fucking nonsense.
It's too bad there's no good torrent of all the episodes in subtitled Japanese. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

As much as I hate the 16:9, which is at its most obvious and hideous during a few shots of the opening, ending, and the eyecatches (and also when it is MOST LIKELY TO BE NOTICED since everyone has seen these shots over and over again a billion times), I have to admit that it IS kind of satisfying to watch on a widescreen TV, and aside from the shots I mentioned, rarely does anything stand out as glaringly bad framing. I mean fuck, so you miss the fucking bottom of Krillin's boot. It's nothing to cry about.
Lexy and I watched episodes from the Cell saga box last night, and the night before!!! |

Also, breaking it into "seasons", when the "seasons" don't correspond in any way to how the show was actually scheduled for broadcast in Japan or America, but hey, we better call it "season" boxes because that's what everybody else does, durr, right?, is severely irritating. |

I am also concerned about the image errors from the remastering process. How noticeable are they? _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

I can't believe you just called him Krillin.

Not only do I write it that way now, I PRONOUNCE it that way.
I can't bring myself to say his name with correct Japanese pronunciation around Lexy - someone who just says "Krillin."
The awkwardness of taking the pronunciation high ground, the risk of the other person sitting there silently rolling their eyes and thinking of you as gay, is simply too great. |

Correct.
That's what it will be.
The character's actual name, given by his creator, as opposed to made up gibberish. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

Guy, my girlfriend keeps saying "all intensive purposes" and "couldn't care less"! If I don't say it, she'll think I'm a nerd and deny me that bumpy, flabby, rubber pussy. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

Totally not at all analogous, and you know that it isn't.
Assuming Japanese pronunciation in order to say names (especially when those names are derived from English words) is just about the gayest possible thing a person can do, and people who are particular about doing this are physically painful to be in the presence of.
I think this discussion has been held in the past, but I know for sure that Big Fagot at least will back me up on this. |

Peter is an idiot dubbie, with the brains of a dead ox, the modesty of Bulma Briefs, the heighth of Krillin, (note: dubbie is short) the fighting skills of Mr. Satan, and a son of a bitch dubbie who knows nothing about anything in the anime world. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

Re: Dragon Ball Z |

You KNOW that it's more complicated than this.
"Wait a minute... do I say 'Say-du' or 'Cell?' They're saying 'Say-du' in the anime... but they're really just badly approximating the pronunciation of the English word 'Cell'.... so shouldn't I just say 'Cell,' since that's what they WOULD say if their mouths weren't retarded?"
Why is it that Japanese pronunciation is automatically the correct one? If they pronounce my name "Kudeesu", and I have to accept that as correct (which I do) when they say my name in their language, then why shouldn't I have the right to say "Krillin" when I'm saying that name in MY language?
My rule is, you go with the pronunciation rules of the language you are speaking. That's the only way to be fair about this.
Obviously I'll say "Kudeedin" if I ever happen to speak a sentence in the Japanese language containing that name, but as long as I say English, I'm going to say Krillin.
Fuck the Japanese, is what I mean. |

I have no love for American otaku, but Kuririn is his name, not Krillin. Kuririn/Krillin is so ridiculously not the same as Kurisu/Chris or Say-du/Cell.
Adopting the accent isn't necessary, but I've taken enough film classes to know that it's perfectly natural to refer to someone the way their name would be pronounced by native speakers of their language. Calling that pretentious is only degrees away from saying that people who watch the Japanese version (or, say, people who bother to read books) are pretentious, it's all on the same scale of accepting what is easy as opposed to what is right. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

This is like if Kurisu were so difficult to pronounce in Japanese that Japanese people just named you Kuku. Not a nickname, they just all agreed that you were born Kuku [retarded stand-in for] Psaros and anybody who called you Chris was being a prick.
I'm sure that Jean Valjean is very difficult to say in Japan, but I don't think that, to them, the main character of Les Misérables is named Jonjon. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

The problem is that "Krillin" and "Kuririn" are both equally correct romanizations of the kana that make up the name, as are "Bulma" "Buruma" etc. There are no specific rules for converting Japanese and English between one another.
His name isn't Kuririn any more than it's Krillin. The Japanese syllabary is more limited and less specific than English. |
