I haven't heard it yet, but Lil Wayne remixes of every current popular song in black culture appear on Q93 some 400 times a day, and they are all relatively amusing.

He's taken using an autotuner to a completely unprofessional level of laziness.

Does he use it on the new album? On his LOVE IN THE CLUB remix, halfway through his verse, you notice he's using it, and his voice suddenly begins to sound like a robot. I guess he was just singing on key before that part.

I apologize for the delay. I present to you an honest attempt to "defend" Lil' Wayne's new best-selling album "Tha Carter III", although I do not see how or why this album needs to be defended. From what I have heard (and admittedly I have only heard a handful of tracks), the work does not need an apologist as much as it deserves an enthusiast. And enthusiasts, it has. It is the fastest selling hip hop record since 50 Cent's 2005 release, and its Rolling Stone review begins with the line, "OK, it's true: he really is the best rapper alive. "

But since I am required to defend it, I will.
The best way to defend this album is to let it speak for itself, so I will work with some randomly selected quotes from the songs I have heard:

"Safe sex is great sex. So get the laytex, cause you don't want that late text, that 'I think I'm late' text.

This, you must admit, is a more clever play on words than hip hop usually has to offer. It doesn't pack the immediate visual punch of a Jay-Z line like, "It's hard to yell with the bar-rell in your mouth," but as far as pure wordplay goes, it is on a higher level. This is typical of Lil' Wayne's current style. He sticks to commercial themes of sex, drugs, and money, but he uses clever puns and a unique, lazy-yet-melodic delivery. JayZ has said of Lil Wayne that the WAY he says things is often more impressive than what he actually says. This line is example of just that, with its rhyme scheme only working because of an awkward rhythm. The strong musical grasp displayed in Lil' Wayne's delivery (as well as his largely improvisatory style) arguably puts him in the tradition of the great New Orleans jazz music with names like Louis Armstrong, James Singleton, and Jelly Roll Morton.
IN SHORT, he is a credit to New Orleans music, boasting high record sales while creating unique, inventive songs.

But the very fact that he's succesful means we should hate him, right? I mean, we're both fans of punk rock and underground music. Doesn't success automatically make Lil' Wayne the enemy?
Well, high school is over, and we can be a little more open minded than that. Lil Wayne is from my city, and the same HATE exists here, with hardcore hip hop fans saying he's commercial and fake. This is all just jealousy. Lil Wayne, after being a new-millenium teen idol, is now exploiting his experience and showing his shrewdness and media-saavy. With the Carter III, Lil' Wayne proves he knows the formula for best selling hip hop: maintaining street credibility while producing teenybopper-friendly radio hits.
This is what rappers like Nelly, Ja Rule, JayZ(to an extent), etc., etc. do to make money via flash-in-the-pan success. Lil Wayne, after already being an established (though lesser known outside of the South) rapper, has proven himself a master of this formula and earned the best sales of his career.
Lollipop is so shameless that it's obviously toungue in cheek, as evidenced by the deliberate corniness of the song's central pun:

"She says, 'He's so sweet that I wanna lick the wrapper.' So I let her lick the rapper." ~Lollipop
It's as if Lil' Wayne assumes a strong white, Southern, country drawl and says, "HEY FELLAZ, I'M LIL WAYNE, THE RAP SAAAANGGGGERRRRR," and thus acheives a number one hit. The unlikeliness of a line such as that being part of a number one hit single is comparable to Nirvana starting their hit song "In Bloom" with the line, "Sell the kids for food."

Speaking of which, Lil Wayne (who plays electric guitar on stage and in the video for LOLLIPOP) claims Nirvana as his favorite rock band. He says knowing about rock music makes people look at him as "a different kind of nigga" (Blender interview). The incidental parallel of both musical acts balancing the "street cred" factors of their respective underground genres with shameless pop sensibility need not be stated. And the significance of Lil Wayne's "different kind of nigga" quote with Nirvana's status as sort of a punk band and in turn the OUTSIDER punk attitude is endlessly complex.

But on a more superficial level, it merely represents his commercially-minded attempt to appeal to a white audience. Two examples of lines from Tha Carter that reference white popular culture are:

So far, I have mainly just defended the commercial nature of Tha CarterIII because I can't help but think its success is the very reason you think I won't defend it. If you actually heard the album, and thought you could get away with dismissing it, then you are hopelessly white bred.

The fact is that this album delivers both white-suburbia friendly party-anthems and genuine, bounce-flavored hip hop music.
You might not understand it, but BOUNCE is a sub-genre of hip hop music comparable with the DANCEHALL subgenre of reggae. It is repetitive and perceivably obnoxious, YES, but it is fun and easy to dance to, and makes great party music. Also, it is native to New Orleans, so you have to expect Lil Wayne to be heavily influenced by it. He expresses this influence in songs like "Flashy and Fly" and "A Millie."


While Wayne is flooding pop radio with the the KanyeWest-production and T-Payne(lol) influenced vocal effects of Lollipop (a thoroughly toungue-in-cheek pop song with a genuinely catchy hook that sounds vaguely familiar), his new album also boasts some legitimate hip hop, like "A Millie" for example.

This line references "sherm", or a joint dipped in embalming fluid, used in economically struggling communities to simulate the effects of PCP, and also serves as a rebuttal of the hip-hop-snob perception that Lil Wayne is one of many pop rappers who do not represent the community and are killing the genre.
